Seven people died after an Aframax tanker undergoing maintenance at a shipyard in Indonesia caught fire on 11 May 2020.  The fire broke out on board the 105,100 dwt Jag Leela docked at the Belawan shipyard in Sumatra, the Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation said.  It was reportedly preceded by several explosions on board the vessel.  Local agencies managed to extinguish the fire in a joint effort later that day. A Spanish-flagged LPG tanker is anchored in Manilla Bay, the Philippines without a rudder and a crew of 15 seafarers running low on supplies, electricity, and wi-fi, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) informed. An Iranian-registered container ship Shahraz and Indonesian-registered bulk carrier Samudra Sakti I ran aground at Batu Berhanti within Indonesian territorial waters on Monday, May 11. The ships ran aground in close proximity, which could indicate that the vessels were either trying to avoid a potential collision with each other or a third vessel. Monaco-based dry bulk shipping company Scorpio Bulkers has decided to postpone the installation of exhaust gas cleaning systems on thirteen of its vessels until at least 2021 as part of its cost-cutting measures. The bulk carrier owner said that the move is expected to delay the payment of between $20 million and $25 million of expenditures until 2021 at the earliest. French container shipping major CMA CGM has secured a €1.05 billion ($1.1. billion) syndicated loan, the company announced. As disclosed, the loan will be arranged by a consortium of banks BNP Paribas, HSBC France and Société Générale and it would be 70% percent guaranteed by the French Government. It is part of France’s State-guaranteed loan scheme established at the end of March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
